Christ The King RC Primary School

Laudato Si' Eco Team

Laudato Si’ is an encyclical written by Pope Francis, it was published on 18th June 2015. Encyclicals are open letters written by the pope.

Laudato Si’ discusses the damage being inflicted on the Earth by humans and calls on ‘every person living on this planet’ to make urgent changes to our lifestyles and how we consume energy in order to protect the planet.

It deals with many environmental issues including:

  • pollution

  • climate change

  • water

  • loss of biodiversity

  • decline in the quality of human life.

In his letter, Pope Francis implores us to work together to create a better world for future generations and asks us to make the necessary changes in our lives in order to take care of, respect and value our ‘common home’.

  • Taking a lead in some assemblies, including sharing important messages to encourage the whole school community to ‘Live Simply’ and look after God’s Creation.
  • Monitoring our school’s energy usage, waste and recycling.
  • Holding competitions and campaigns.
  • Liaising with School Staff and other pupil groups such as the GIFT Team, Caritas Ambassadors, Cadets and School Council;
  • Writing newsletters and info for pupils and parents.
  • Leading the Laudato Si’ Litter Heroes – joining litter picks and monitoring litter around school.

If the Earth Had a Voice...

The CAFOD 'Live Simply' Project

We are proud to be working as a school community, led by Our Laudato Si' Eco Team and GIFT team,  towards achieving the CAFOD Live Simply Award.

The Live Simply Award is an opportunity for Catholic communities – parishes, schools, religious orders and chaplaincies – to respond to Pope Francis’ invitation in Laudato Si’ to “work with generosity and tenderness in protecting this world which God has entrusted to us”.

We hope to gain this award in recognition of our commitment to living simply, sustainably and in solidarity with the poorest communities.

As part of Living Simply, our school aims to impact our global family, our local community and our school community as we reflect the teachings of Laudato Si’ and Catholic Social Teaching along our journey.

Our 'Live Simply' Prayer

Our Live Simply Prayer is displayed in every classroom and is prayed each morning in order to praise God for his wonderful Creation and to remind us of our duty to care for the Earth as Stewards of God's Creation.

The animation below explains how the Live Simply Schools Award is an opportunity for school communities to respond to the Catholic Church's call to live simply, sustainably and in solidarity with the world's poorest communities. To view this video, click the image below.
